Work on the Ash Street rehabilitation project in Strasburg begins today as crews close a section of the road to through traffic to replace water and sewer lines as well as the culvert. Public Works Director Jay McKinley said crews will allow residents to access that section. Crews will post signs directing through traffic on a detour route. comments

Students from Wakefield Country Day School in Flint Hill took part in the weeklong annual National Junior Classical League Convention at Emory University in Atlanta recently. The 22 students earned 145 awards during the convention, according to a news release from the school. comments

"A Taste of Poetry" returns to the Shenandoah Arts Council gallery at 7 p.m. on Aug. 16. The event will feature readings by poets Stephen Malin of Westminster, Md., and Steve Scafidi of Summit Point, W.Va. The event is co-sponsored by the Arts Council and The Sow's Ear Poetry Review, a locally published and nationally recognized literary magazine edited by Kristin Zimet of Winchester and Arts Council board member Robert Lesman of Millwood. The annual series was first held in 2010. The event will treat attendees to snacks in a pre-reading reception starting at 7 p.m. Beer, wine and soft drinks also will be served. The reading will begin at 7:30 p.m. Malin is a contributor of poems to Sow's Ear Poetry Review as well as journals around the country, such as Antioch Review and Sewanee Review. He is professor emeritus at the University of Memphis, where he founded and directed the school's playwriting program. Scafidi is the author of four collections of poetry and his poems have appeared in journals such as Southern Review, American Poetry Review and Prairie Schooner. He has a Bachelors of Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State... comments
